In Conversation: Carrie Mae Weems, Dr Madeleine Haddon and Renée Mussai
15 May 2026

In celebration of Carrie Mae Weem's 2026 solo exhibition at Goodman Gallery London, the artist was in conversation with Dr Madeleine Haddon, Senior Curator of V&A East, and Renée Mussai, an independent curator and writer.

In the talk Carrie highlights how she is interested in creating dynamic platforms and sees her work as a space in which she works out her own ability to see, to think, and to pose new questions in relation to issues that affect and reflect humanity. Her London solo exhibition demonstrates this, with a presentation of recent and significant bodies of work responding to the themes of migration, belonging and the enduring afterlives of the Atlantic passage.

A defining voice in contemporary art, Weems has illuminated histories, communities and narratives too often overlooked. Her practice moves fluidly between aesthetic innovation and political inquiry, positioning the artist as both a witness and a participant in the unfolding of history. Weems has a long-standing presence within London’s institutional landscape. Her major survey Reflections for Now was presented at the Barbican Art Centre in 2023, following earlier exhibitions at Café Gallery Projects curated by Dr Mark Sealy in 2005. Her debut with Goodman Gallery London marks a significant new chapter in her sustained engagement with the city.
