Envisioned by museum director Séverine Fromaigeat and performance artist Paul Maheke, 'Pleasing the Spirits' unfolds across three floors, bringing together an extraordinary set of artefacts from across the world from the Barbier-Mueller collections. The name of the exhibition takes it inspiration from a book found during the curators' research through the collections.

"The Barbier-Mueller Collection, numbering several thousand pieces, forms a living, moving organism, a multicultural body within which the nature and meaning of an object shift according to its position with the community of artworks, depending on its proximity and collison with other objects," notes the exhibition press release.
