Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg has announced representation of South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa. The gallery made the announcement on social media, noting that Sobekwa belongs to “a generation of South African photographers born after the first democratic elections in 1994.” This generation is known for emphasising the importance of storytelling in their art.
Sobekwa’s work occupies a space between photojournalism and art. Beautifully lit and sensitively captured, his photos show the stark realities of the everyday lives of his subjects. Sobekwa’s first museum show opened in 2022 at Huis Marseille in the Netherlands. In 2023 he was awarded a John Kobal Foundation Fellowship. He won the FNB Art Prize the same year. He has a solo exhibition forthcoming in September 2024 at Johannesburg Art Gallery.
